This started with one question, twenty-five years ago: how do I resolve the tension in my body.
The goal was simple. More ease. More fluidity. To function better.
Seems like a simple objective.
The journey it took me on was transformational, and at times deeply destabilizing. Deeply humbling. Terrible and beautiful at the same time.
That was the norm for a long stretch. It isn't anymore, and that change is part of why I'm writing this.
What I found was that to get the ease I wanted, I had to process what was in the way. Rather obvious when I say it. But the actuality of it meant going into the places in my psyche, and into the very tension I was carrying in my body. That was no small feat. It meant allowing myself to feel my deepest fears, and the messages I'd internalized about worth and security.
The words make sense. The actual process is another thing.
I did that the hard way, for a long time.
I found a way into the same territory that is remarkably simple.
I'm still a little astonished by it. After twenty-five years of working with bodies — mine and other people's — I changed how I was approaching the tension, and things started clearing faster and more completely than anything I'd seen before.
Not through effort. Through relaxation, and a very specific kind of gentle engagement.
The physical tension releases. Emotional material moves and processes without having to be excavated. And the habituated patterns — the mental grooves we live in without noticing — loosen along with everything else.
All of it easier than it has any right to be.
The hard part was never the practice.
The hard part was finding it. Twenty-five years of going the difficult route, into the deep water, without a map — and what was waiting at the end turned out to be simple enough to teach in a few minutes.
That's a strange thing to sit with. It's also the most useful thing I have to offer.
I'm not a therapist. This is ground many people do well with a therapist, and I'd say so plainly. I'm just a guy who went into the deep waters of the psyche, the emotions, and the tension in the body, and came back with something that works.
It's about you finding your way.
You find how to settle yourself. You find how to lean into your own strength. Nobody can do that part for you, and the practice is built so that you don't need anyone to.
That's the part I'm most glad about. It costs nothing. It needs no equipment and no practitioner. A chair and a few minutes, whenever you want them, for the rest of your life.
What's left, once the method is simple, is doing it. That turns out to be the real difficulty — not the technique, but coming back to it after life gets busy and you forget.
That's what the weekly session is for.
